Welcome to this suicide prevention training, we’re delighted you are here! The goal of this training is to equip educators and school staff with knowledge and resources in addressing suicide in the schools, in a way that sustains their wellbeing and prevents burnout. Suicide is a challenging, triggering, difficult topic to discuss, and this training provides reflections for the viewer to think about how suicide have impacted them personally, messages they’ve received about emotional struggle, comfort level in discussing suicide, and ways to identify compassion fatigue, develop boundaries, and emotionally recharge. The training is packed with information about risk and protective factors, do’s and don’t’s in addressing the topic of suicide, and suicide prevention resources. Safety plan templates are also provided.

Dr. Jennifer Londgren
Dr. Jennifer Londgren is a licensed marriage and family therapist, a nationally certified counselor, and a board certified telemental health provider. She is an Associate Professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato and the Program Coordinator for the Alcohol and Drug Studies Program. She is the founder of The New Leaf Wellness Institute, an organization dedicated to helping behavioral healthcare providers thrive through customized continuing education and mental health coaching. Dr. Londgren leads a variety of workshops and seminars on topics related to mental wellbeing, self-care, social media, and innovative teaching techniques. She is the author of two books related to addiction and emotional well-being.

This training is packed with various risk factors and signs of struggle in students to be curious about. It discusses the various social, emotional, and behavioral warning signs to be aware of.

This training goes through how to respond and what to say if a student comes to you with suicidal ideation: stay calm, ask them openly, and respond with empathy. Tell them who you are going to share information with and why. It also goes through the “don’t’s” in this tough conversation: don’t dismiss them, challenge them, or assume they are too young to be suicidal.

This training is designed by a mental health professional who knows that this is a tough and triggering topic. Throughout the training there are reflection prompts and resources, including a safety plan template. Even if you aren’t the person crafting the plan with a student, it’s important to know what it entails.
